*We have sent our seed packets and rack cards to the Ukrainian Embassy both this year and in previous years. We never know where are seeds will travel and be planted. Much of this work is based upon faith and the belief that good must prevail over evil. This report from US Ukrainian Activists warmed our hearts. (DC News Now story in link below.)
On May 11, 2025, we held our 4th Annual Sunflower Planting Event in Support of Ukraine across from the war crimes embassy of the russian federation.
Thank you so much to all the supporters of Ukraine and the representatives of the Embassy of Ukraine in the USA / Посольство України в США who joined us again this year to plant sunflowers!
Nadiya Shaporynska, President of US Ukrainian Activists (USUA), opened the event:
"The sunflower is the national flower of Ukraine and a powerful symbol of our fight for freedom, independence, and victory.
Despite russia’s repeated genocidal attempts to erase Ukraine, Ukrainians will never stop defending their right to life and liberty.
This year, we proudly continue our tradition of planting sunflowers by the russian embassy to remind the russian federation that Ukraine will fight for its freedom and independence until every inch of its territory is liberated.
Ukraine will win!"
We are deeply grateful to our American friend and member of US Ukrainian Activists, Benjamin Wittes, who began this sunflower planting initiative — with the support of US Ukrainian Activists — in front of the russian embassy in April 2022, just two months after russia launched its full-scale genocidal war against Ukraine!
Our warm appreciation also goes to another American friend and member of USUA — Connor O'Brien — for his active role in co-organizing the planting and replanting events, and for his dedicated care and watering of the Polonne Sunflower Garden!
This year, we also planted some sunflower seeds from the U.S. community initiative Vermont Plants Sunflowers for Ukraine. We are thankful to everyone in Vermont for standing with Ukraine!
